Putting aside the thug element of the Nazis party, I've said repeatedly that one of my greatest sadnesses was that not only did we fight the Germans, but we fought them twice in modern times. Of the many veterans I've spoken to in my time, they agreed. Putting aside the pact to protect Belgian neutrality we could have avoided the slaughter of the Great War. Lord Grey tried desperately not to get us dragged into it but failed. The French never seemed that grateful for our help in the trenches and perceived it as "their war" due to it being on French soil. I also believe we could have avoided WW2 as well. As far as I know, Hitler always viewed Slavic nations as somewhat inferior. Having visited many war graves in my time I think I was most disturbed by the German one, rarely open to the public, on the French/Belgian border. Incredibly sombre with four bodies to each grave. Dieter 21, Manfred 18, Heinz 23, Johanas 24...and so on. Such a shocking waste of life. And for what? Some of Europe's greatest minds wiped out. I've never felt right about official narratives of this part of history, so started to watch Europa the Last Battle. From it, you begin to understand why the German people supported Hitler. While the rest of Europe was broken, Germany was thriving under his domestic policy abd the shocking terms of Versaille. Despite history, I've always seen Germans as part of a wider European family never an enemy. We should never be fighting our own. We have far greater enemies to face in the coming years. An interesting video particularly as history should be viewed with accuracy rather than sentiment.
