⁣⁣⁣⁣.Why is the West in such confusion? Why are our liberal democracies resorting to tyranny, using a phony medical pandemic to bully their citizens into submission? Is it because we have rejected the cornerstone, the Logos, the Word, the light of Christ? Western civilization sprang from the intellectual soil of ancient Greece, that long tradition of philosophical enquiry, of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle. That was the first pillar, the enlightenment of the intellect through enquiry and debate. The second pillar gave us the light of Christ, the metaphysics of Christianity, largely through the labours of Saint Paul, the Evangelist. Significantly, we are told in the Acts of the Apostles that "you builders have rejected Jesus, the cornerstone, at your peril." Now there is great confusion abounding everywhere and much fear. It seems that we are becoming less able to discuss things rationally. The intellect has become dull because we allow only our instinct and our appetites to determine any course of action. And so, we find ourselves infantile, urgent and demanding. There is no higher aspiration other than the desire to satiate the will to pleasure or to power. We worship new gods. We create new rituals. We have new sacraments. Rather tellingly, most of our fellow citizens are wearing muzzles. Dissent is muzzled. Free opinion is muzzled. We are afraid to speak our minds. We strain to hear conversation where the mouth is veiled. The mask has taken on the aura of religious apparel, like the kippah in Judaism or the taqiyah in Islam. How ridiculous we look traipsing around the shopping malls in our nose-bags. We have become, in those mocking words of Joe Biden, dog-faced pony soldiers.
