WHAT IS JOCK ITCH?
Jock itch (Tinea Cruris) is a fungal infection of the groin. It is a common problem most often seen in adult men.

WHAT CAUSES JOCK ITCH?
Infection often comes from fungal infections of the feet (athlete's foot) or fingernails initially, which is spread by scratching or the use of an infected towel.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF JOCK ITCH?
*Itching and soreness around the groin, scrotum and upper thigh
*Red, scaly rash over the groin, scrotum and upper thighs (in men)
*Ring-like rash on the buttocks
*The rash does not affect the vagina, penis or anus usually

TREATMENTS:
Jock Itch is treated with antifungal creams you can buy over the counter or on prescription. Clomazol 1% cream or Micreme H cream should be used. Do not use a steroid only cream, as this will make the infection worse.

If the infection does not settle, a doctor can prescribe Itraconazole tablets which treat more stubborn infections.

PREVENTING JOCK ITCH:
1. Wash your groin daily; then dry thoroughly.
Drying is most important point as a damp groin is an ideal site for fungal germs to multiply. (A hairdryer is useful if you have hairy groins.)
2. Change your underwear daily. Fungi may multiply in flakes of skin in unwashed underwear.
3. Check for athlete's foot and treat it if you have it. Athlete's foot is a common fungal infection of the toes. In a typical case of athlete's foot, the skin between the toes is itchy and flaky - especially between the outer two toes. The fungi from athlete's foot may spread to the groin. The same creams are used to treat athlete's foot and fungal groin infection (tinea cruris).
4. Do not share towels with people in communal changing rooms. 5. Wash towels frequently.
6. Keep your own towel when you have a fungal skin infection to reduce the chance of passing on the fungus to other you live with.

OTHER CAUSES OF AN ITCHY GROIN:
Please see your doctor if the Jock Itch treatments do not work. You may have another problem like -
Psoriasis
Seborrheic Dermatitis
Lichen Simplex
Eczema
