Yes, for me it was a preventive success. But, initially there was only the gama globulin injection available. I took that injection.
A girl, a classmate, Sue Shelby, caught the Bulbar polio and had to be placed in an iron lung. She eventually died from the disease.
Nothing severe developed. I had a mild fever for a day. I remember the injected area stinging. Two nurses held me from backing away.
The gamma globulin was shown to be about 80 percent effective in preventing the development of paralytic poliomyelitis.
Albert Sabin developed another live, oral polio vaccine. I recall taking it on a sugar cube.
A single dose of Sabin's oral polio vaccine produces immunity to all three poliovirus serotypes in about 50 percent of recipients.
So far, so good.
Great post! Dr. Suzanne Humphries' book 'Dissolving Illusions - Vaccines and Forgotten History' goes into great detail about this as does Forrest Maready's book The Moth in the Iron Lung. After reading Humphries' book you will regret ever having gotten any kind of vaccine and you should never even consider ever getting another. Maready's book is a great source of the true history.
