I’m sceptical about any benefit to the customer from so-called ‘Smart’ meters. What they do is to allow other organisations (typically third party companies - not necessarily the energy supplier firm themselves) access to a lot of private data re. Energy use. No doubt it varies a bit globally, but the idea is much the same.
The structure of power distribution here in the UK is complex, to say the least, in as much as the physical ‘district network operator’ (DNO) is logically separate from the ‘utility suppliers’, and the addition of such meters adds a third firm, in effect. The supplier I use is quite keen to persuade us to use ‘smart’ meters, but they walk away when one also exports spare power (from solar PV).

They gave me another heart attack. I'm a 73 year old Vietnam vet dealing with many health issues including agent orange.
We refused consent from the beginning and would not let the power company install one on our house. We check periodically to make sure they did not sneak to change it anyway.
